Being able to handle everyday tasks — dressing, bathing, walking, climbing stairs — without being held back by fatigue, pain, or other limiting symptoms is one of the biggest factors in quality of life as people age. New research presented this week suggests that something as simple as a daily multivitamin may help preserve that independence longer.
The findings come from a large analysis presented at NUTRITION 2026, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition, held in National Harbor, Maryland.
What Makes This Study Different
Most research on multivitamins and aging has focused on preventing major diseases like heart disease or cognitive decline. This study instead zeroed in on something more everyday: functional health — how capable people actually feel in daily life.
“What makes this work unique is our focus on functional health, how people actually feel and function in their daily lives, rather than just the prevention of major diseases,” explained lead researcher Bayu B. Bekele, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow at the Georgia Prevention Institute of the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. Bekele worked alongside Yanbin Dong, MD, PhD, the institute’s director.
A Large Study of Adults Over 60
The analysis drew on data from more than 16,000 adults aged 60 and older who took part in the COcoa Supplement Multivitamins Outcomes Study, known as COSMOS. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups: a daily multivitamin, a cocoa extract supplement, both supplements together, or a placebo — with placebos also given to anyone receiving only one active supplement, to keep the trial blinded.
Multivitamins Linked to Better Daily Function
After three years, people in the multivitamin group reported meaningfully better functional health than those in the placebo group. Researchers measured this using responses to a standard health questionnaire — the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire — which is normally used to track how heart-related symptoms affect daily life.
The biggest differences showed up in two areas: symptom burden (how much fatigue, breathlessness, or swelling interfered with daily life) and the overall clinical summary score, which combines symptom burden with physical ability.
Bekele explained that these gains may be tied to the multivitamin’s broader effects on heart health, circulation, and physical endurance — helping people keep doing the things that matter most day to day. “Multivitamin use supporting heart health and overall physical function may help maintain the ability to perform everyday activities such as dressing, bathing, walking, climbing stairs, jogging or hurrying, and completing household chores,” he said, adding that the benefits may matter most for people already dealing with fatigue, shortness of breath, or swelling in the feet.
What About the Cocoa Extract?
The study also tested cocoa extract, a supplement rich in flavanols that’s been studied for cardiovascular benefits. Across the full study group, cocoa extract didn’t produce a significant improvement in functional health. It did, however, show a meaningful benefit for one specific subgroup: people with congestive heart failure.
That distinction matters — it suggests cocoa extract’s benefits, if real, may be more targeted to people with existing heart conditions, rather than a broad anti-aging effect like the one seen with multivitamins.
Not a Replacement for Diet and Exercise
Despite the encouraging results, the research team was careful to frame this as a complement to, not a substitute for, healthy habits. Multivitamins shouldn’t replace a balanced diet or regular physical activity, and anyone considering starting a new supplement should talk with their doctor first — particularly because vitamin and mineral needs, and any interactions with existing medications, vary from person to person.
Preliminary Findings, More Review To Come
It’s also worth noting where this research currently stands. Bekele presented the findings on July 27, 2026, as part of the Vitamins and Minerals Oral Session at NUTRITION 2026. Like most conference presentations, this work was reviewed by an expert committee before being accepted, but it hasn’t yet gone through full peer review — the more rigorous process required for publication in a scientific journal.
That means the results, while promising, should be considered preliminary until they’re formally published and reviewed by outside experts. The study was supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health.
Why This Research Matters
For families and caregivers, “does this help my parent get through their day” can matter just as much as long-term disease prevention. This research adds to a growing body of evidence — including earlier COSMOS findings linking multivitamins to slower cognitive decline and biological aging — suggesting that a daily multivitamin might be a low-cost, low-risk way to help older adults preserve independence, even as more rigorous confirmation is still needed.
